Why is my dog being so clingy to me?
Hi, I am on an online website called www.dogsters.com.
I have a two year old dog whose owner has abandoned him. He says that he will put him up for adoption, and will let me adopt him, and will give me his phone number to call and arrange the adoption.
I want to take him back to my house and have him as my own dog.
The owner hasn't replied to my e-mls to say when he is going to get in touch with me, and the phone number he gave me just went strght to voiceml, so I am not sure whether the owner has even replied.
Anyway, we're talking through an ad-hoc internet forum, and the owner tells me that the dog only comes when I am around. I am very happy about this, and I am a really nice person. However, I am also really busy and work long hours, so I have to make sure that the dog gets walked.
Anyway, the owner says that when he's not with me, the dog is okay, but when he's around me, he just wants to be carried around and be attached to me. He also told me that when I am not home for a while, the dog will wake up after several hours, and lie next to him.
When I am around, he just wants to cuddle on my lap, but when I'm not around, he wants to be close to me all the time.
Now, that is not how I expect a dog to behave! I was thinking of getting another dog, but I want to be able to take the one who has come with me.
What should I do? How can I ensure that the dog understands that he should behave like other dogs when I'm not there?
Thank you!
If you want to adopt a pet, please contact a local animal shelter, as pets tend to have fewer health problems when they have a chance to adapt to their new home, surroundings, etc.

Tips
There are very few breeds of dog that can be considered "hypo-thymic," and these are the few. The "hyper-thymic" (hypo-thymic) breeds are quite rare, and include the following:
Boxer
Bulldog
French Bulldog
Jack Russell Terrier
Irish Setter
Pekingese
Pomeranian
Terrier Mix
Yorkshire Terrier
The best thing you can do for this dog is to find a home that is willing to work with him. Your question suggests that the dog has a lot of energy and is not used to being alone for long periods of time.
Remember that these dogs need to know that they're not the only ones in the house and that they can't just go wherever they please. You should give him a few toys that are designed to help trn the dog's attention when you are away.
